About Us
Former Chairman Ronnie Lupe flicks the switch to power ON the radio station in Whiteriver on September 11, 1982 during the “Dedication of KNNB Radio”. The White Mountain Apache Tribe now has its own radio station with its call name “KNNB” and its call numbers 88.1 FM in the Whiteriver, AZ area and 89.9 FM in the Cibecue, AZ area.
There are many radio stations throughout the United States. The call names are divided in two sections. The Missouri River is the mid-point. Radio stations east of the Missouri River begin with the letter “W” and radio stations to west begin with the letter “K”. So our local radio station begins with the letter “K” and the remaining three letters “NNB” stand for Ndee Nitch’i’ Binagode’e which means “Speaking to you in Apache”. KNNB Apache Radio promotes speaking to its listeners in the Apache language on the radio air waves.
On October 8th, 2019 at noon, Chairwoman Gwendena Lee-Gatewood ushers KNNB Apache Radio into the 21st century…to be heard live to the world for the first time.
The Apache language can now be heard by those tuning in from any corner of the earth. The only station in the world to broadcast in our White Mountain Apache language. We celebrate our People, our Culture, and our Language.
